Aman Ellis – The Cacti EP, Vol. 2 – album review

Aman Ellis delivers a wonderfully unsteady and off-center mix of playful beats, cinematic melodies and samples reminiscent of late-90s electronica on his latest, The Cacti EP, Vol. 2 (free download).  There’s just enough glitch and chaotic sampling to keep things interesting, but catchy melody and steady beats are in charge on this Brooklyn by-way-of Alabama producer.

Soundscapes on The Cacti EP, Vol. 2 range from lounge-worthy Low End Theory cuts(“Rhymes with Schtick”) and Play-era Moby outtakes (“Romantic Organ Moods”) to glitchy trip-hop (“Witches Rue”) and Kodachrome 50s nostalgia (“Klipspringer Plays the Piano”). Despite its odd schizophrenia, The Cacti EP, Vol. 2 is delivered with a unified vision, a common thread. Even if we can’t seem to put our finger on what that is. And we’re okay with that.

About down.caster

Downcaster(s) is not a music critic, he's a music fan. So he usually doesn't talk about music from a "you should listen to this because it's moving art forward" perspective. He likes the "you should listen to it because it kicks ass" perspective.
