The Morning Benders are back with a new name and a new sound. The New York (but sometimes San Francisco, other times LA) band has given way to their own unyielding political correctness and re-branded themselves “POP ETC” after learning “bender” is a derogatory term for “homosexual” in the UK. In the process, the group has departed from the lush, organic retro-rock we flipped for on Big Echo, and developed a more synthetic, stylish tone. While the new name is kinda’ sorta’ okay, the new sound is kinda’ sorta’ awesome. Stream their new, self titled EP below, or download it free.

Curren$y teams with Styles P on free EP

New Orleans emcee Curren$y dropped his second free EP of 2012 today, a collaborative run with Styles P. At this clip, Curren$y Spitta’s on pace to release 12 free EPs, which we’re totally cool with. We’re actually looking forward to lacing together a mixtape of highlights and stuffing it in your Christmas stocking.
The latest EP, #The1st28 (free download) isn’t as dense as Curren$y’s first 2012 effort, Here. And it’s more laid back. But it still swaggers, and we’re impressed with how well Styles P’s sharper flow balances Spitta’s laid back drawl.
Static Shock goes solo, debuts ‘LEMMIEHOLLA@CHU’ EP
Los Angeles producer Static Shock (whom you may recall from his Furious + the Static Shock days) surprised us recently with his latest, LEMMIEHOLLA@CHU. The EP plays like an agoraphobic steam of consciousness, where random noises and instrumentation are layered in chaotic arrangements. There’s a certain awkward comfort to the collection, which sounds vaguely like a set of Nicholas Jarr demos. It’s cool. And we’re curious to hear more from The Static Shock as he evolves from his “tough pop” phase with Furious.
Curren$y drops his first 2012 mixtape, ‘Here’

By this time (February), we were expecting at least three mixtapes from prolific NoLa MC Curren$y. Last year he put out at least four mixtapes and two proper albums. Most of them ripped, one of them (Verde Terrace) made our list of 2011 best albums. While we would understand if Curren$y decided to take 2012 off (it will take us at least a couple of years to get bored with the material he put out last year), Spitta’ has no plans to slow down. It’s February, and he’s already got a (pretty cool) mixtape, Here, that you can grab right, um, here.
Radar Blip: N’ere Dowells

Brookly four-set The N’ere Dowells have our attention with their quirky, mildly affected 90s-spun indie rock. It reminds us a bit of early, raw Built to Spill, a pretty big compliment, but one we’re pretty serious about.
We thought about posting “Jungle Song”, but we liked “Anabel” so much, we decided to post the entire three-song EP, Demo (which is totally goddamn free). We’re not sure what the EP’s title means (we’re not big dictionary people)… but we have a reporter trying to track down someone from the N’ere Dowells to explain it to us.
Knife Party debut with “100% No Modern Talking” [free]
Australian tech duo Knife Party (which features two-thirds of pendulum, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen) are debut with a free EP, 100% No Modern Talking. Out of the current crop of post-Skrillex warped heavy, glitch-infected house acts, we rank Knife Party among the elite. So what? So we’re pretty stoked to pass along 100% No Modern Talking. Make sure you stick around until the last song, “Fire Hive”, it’s a sick burner that’ll melt yer face off before the ecstasy kicks in…
Black Moth Super Rainbow anchor ‘Vicious Circles Vol 1′ EP
Hand Drawn Dracula is a record label. Vicious Circles Vol. 1 is a five-song EP that they put together where Black Moth Super Rainbow, Holy Fuck and Shugo Tokumaru cover each others songs. And it’s free. If that doesn’t sound awesome enough, wait until you hear Shugo Tokumaru’s acid folk orchestra version of “Sun Lips” or Black Moth Super Rainbow’s sweeping, lightly pixelated rendition of Tokumaru’s “Hidamari.”
Like Hand Drawn Dracula at Facebook to get the EP.
Elliott Smith’s complete, ‘lost’ WMUC sessions emerge

A while back, we shared news that a lost Elliott Smith song had turned up in the vaults of Washington DC’s WMUC-FM. It was actually a capture of the late Portland troubadour warming up for a live on-air set (the song, “Misery Let Me Down”, by the way is fucking awesome). Now, we’ve got a link to the complete on-air session (minus “Misery”). If you’re not an Elliott Smith fan, I’m sorry, but you probably won’t care about this (start by finding yourself a copy of EIther/Or). If you are an Elliott Smith fan, we guarantee chills during “Alameda” and “Thirteen” (a Big Star cover). Grab the whole set here.
Oh, and here’s the studio version of “Thirteen” from the posthumous Smith compilation, New Moon.
Shigeto posts ‘New Light’ free

Dude. It’s a good week to be a Shigeto fan. First, the Low End Theory-leaning Brooklyn beat slinger released the title track from his new LP, Lineage (due January 31), for free (get it). Then, today, he made his recent New Light EP available for free. Although much of the EP spins blankly in ambient experimentation (which some of us like), things get hopping at the midpoint of “Hear Me Out”, and shit gets downright funky during the hustling, swirling jazz-hop of “Self Compassion”.
