Death Grips – Black Jack – video

Sacramento avant hip-hop crew Death Grips are set to release two albums in 2012, according to a post at their Facebook. And that’s all we know. They don’t give us release dates. They don’t tell us the album names. And they don’t hint at guests or collaborators (of which we’re sure there will be tons). We’re not even sure that this song, “Black Jack”, appears on either album, but we like it…

Death Grips broke through in 2011 with the raw, chopped and savage Exmillitary (which made our list of best hip-hop albums last year). Grab it free here.

Speaking of Exmillitary, and as long as we’re watching Death Grips shit. Put this on full screen, turn up your headphones and hurt yourself…

Ryshon Jones – Late Night With My Best Friend pt. 2 – video

Later this week, we’re expecting a fresh mixtape, Happily Unhappy, from Philadelphia MC Ryshon Jones. Earlier this year, we were blown away by the warped sounds and stoned sexuality of the “Shonhijuana” clip (watch it) from his previous effort, BrightestNightsDarkestDays (free download). Continuing with the eerie visuals, Ryshon Jones takes us down a darker, more shadowy path in his video for “Late Night With My Best Friend pt. 2″, one of the more disturbing breakup songs we’ve heard in recent memory.

Orange Goblin – Red Tide Rising – free mp3

English stoner rock crew Orange Goblin have been carving heavy-as-shit riffs since the mid-nineties, but they still sound pretty bad ass in their latest video, “Red Tide Rising”. This song is sick. And the video, featuring very cool animation, lots of banging heads and a ouija board is totally rad.  Needless to say, but we’ll say it, we’re pretty stoked to hear the rest of their forthcoming LP, A Eulogy for the Damned (due February 14th).

TOKiMONSTA – Darkest (dim) – video

We’re not sure if you noticed, but LA beat slinger TOKiMONSTA put out the exceptional Creature Dreams EP. It was mellower than what we’ve come to expect from her live shows, but we were impressed nonetheless. Dig the new video for standout track “Darkest (dim)” below. No, the song’s not that dark. But you can get your shadow fix with another Creature Dreams, um, highlight, “Day Job” (free download).

Red Fang – Hank Is Dead – Video

If we gave out lifetime achievement awards for killer videos, Portland stoner rock clan Red Fang would win one. On the band’s latest clip, for the exceptionally rad “Hank is Dead” (from their latest LP, Murder the Mountains), the plot line revolves around air guitar and gets high marks for excellent use of an awkward shower moment, outstanding deployment of a paper plane and we’re happy to see the band’s station wagon survived the last video shoot…

Speaking of the last video shoot, do check out the video for “Wires” (also from Murder) and the amazing (yeah, amazing) video for “Prehistoric Dog”, from the bands’ 2009, self-titled debut, here.

ScHoolboy Q – NigHtmare on Figg St – video

Earlier this month ScHoolboy Q (who runs in the Black Hippy crew with Ab Soul, Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock) dropped a pretty rad album, Habits & Contradictions. Well, January isn’t even over yet, but Schoolboy Q has already released the second video from the LP, a clip for “Nightmare on Figg St.” We liked the earlier video, for “Hands on the Wheel (f. A$AP Rocky)”, but we really like the menacing thump and bleak, urban visuals in his latest…

Ryshon Jones – Shonijuana – video

Ryshon matches a strange home-spun video full of creepy, stoned sexuality with the looping, bleary eyed limp of “Shonijuana”, and the results are too bizarre not to pass on. If you like what you hear (ahem, that would be you fans of Shabazz Palaces), then you should track down the rest of Ryshon’s BrightestNightsDarkestDays mixtape (free download).

4th Pyramid – Webslinger – video

Toronto MC 4th Pyramid (yes, Canadian hip-hop is more than Drake) just hit our radar with his video for “Webslinger”. Best we can tell, he’s on a Universal-related label, though the production on “Webslinger” doesn’t exactly say major label; it’s more organic and gritty than that. Indeed, we dig the classic boom-bap dressed with dramatic string and brass samples, and we dig 4th Pyramid’s laid-back flow. Look for “Webslinger” on this dude’s debut, Pyramid Scheme (due in March).

Quilt – Young Gold – video

Boston-based 70′s soft rockers Quilt made us all happy and stoned last year with their self-titled debut (released in November… so you’re not that far behind the curve… go get it). We posted a couple of their free songs, which you might have noticed if you took a break from watching the latest Lana Del Rey video or Odd Future fiasco or whatever else normal alts were doing last year. Not that those are bad things, we were doing the same thing. It’s just that– wait, what were we talking about? Oh, Quilts. Check out their latest, a very cool non-wide screen, non-HD video for rad song, “Young Gold”.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – Thuggin – Video

We’ve always liked Indiana MC Freddie Gibbs’ flow, but we always thought something was missing. After listening to Gibbs laid back, thick drawl couched in Madlib’s lush, retrospective sonic architecture, we think the MC has finally found his place. We say ditch the more spacious, gangster beats that you typically favor, dude, and stick to this dusty, sample-heavy stuff.
